The Iraq War

As the Page One Picture Editor, each day I was looking for the one image that was most newsworthy for that particular cycle. When selecting the final image, sometimes from among tens (or even hundreds) of possibilities, I sought an image that, either captured a moment, evoked an emotion, provided important information or had the aesthetic qualities of solid journalistic photography. Leading lines, graphics, composition, layering, the photographer’s use of light - are all considered. And when those elements align, combining many or even all of those singular characteristics, impactful pages result.
